In our fast-paced world, distractions compete for our attention at every turn. Whether it's emails, social media, or endless to-do lists, it can be hard to focus on what truly matters. A passage that has captivated my attention for ages is Luke 10:38-42, the story of Martha and Mary. This narrative speaks volumes to many of us, particularly as we navigate our busy lives as women.
Picture this: Jesus arrives in a village and is welcomed into Martha's home. While Martha is bustling around serving, her sister Mary chooses to sit at Jesus' feet, soaking in every word He is speaking. This scene leads to some important questions: Could Martha have taken a moment to pause and finish her tasks later? Could the dishes wait? Did she fully grasp the significance of having Jesus in her home? What was so pressing?

Martha’s busy behavior is familiar to many of us. I can visualize her frantically ensuring everyone's needs are met—straightening throw pillows, warming cups of coffee, and greeting guests. This scenario reminds me of a typical life group meeting in my cottage by a quiet creek, here in North Carolina, where my focus often shifts from listening to the conversations to making sure everything is just right.
Honestly, more often than I care to admit, I find myself being a modern-day Martha. I keep pushing through my tasks without pausing. The intriguing part of this story is that Jesus does not criticize Martha for her service. Instead, He gently highlights that Mary's choice represents what is most important. Did you catch that? Necessary! Mary recognized the moment's priority, while Martha got lost in her chores.
Jesus's words to Martha are striking: “You are anxious and troubled about many things.” In today's Chaotic environment, this statement resonates deeply with several of us. According to a survey by the American Psychological Association, nearly 75% of adults feel overwhelmed by their responsibilities. Our to-do lists have become our task master's, and we are drowning beneath them trying to catch a breath. I can certainly relate; the demands of family, homeschooling, and Ministry often leave me feeling pulled in multiple directions. We all wear a multitude of hats, if we are not intentional, we will most certainly lack discernment in what is "the next right thing." As Elisabeth Elliot was known for saying.
The Heart of the Issue
What Jesus addresses with Martha is fundamental. Serving is good; however, it is crucial to know when to take a step back and evaluate the heart motive behind the service. Martha's efforts weren't wrong; they simply weren't the right choice at that moment.
This highlights an essential lesson: we need to hit pause sometimes. Life has a way of overwhelming us, and it's easy to overlook what is genuinely significant. Jesus invites us to examine our priorities. Are we so engrossed in our tasks that we miss the chance to connect with Jesus and those around us?
Martha’s distraction reflects our own struggles. We often find ourselves anxious and troubled, similar to our sister. Life’s demands can weigh heavily, leading us to enforce a “do-it-all” mentality. However, Jesus reminds us: there's a time for everything, and sometimes that time is for stillness. We cannot do it all and do it all well. We have to cultivate rhythms of work and rest, service and stillness.
Making the Best Choice
Mary’s decision to sit at Jesus' feet is a profound symbol of valuing spiritual nourishment. In a world that constantly pulls us apart, nurturing our relationship with Christ must take precedence. Mary chose the good portion, and Jesus affirms that choice.
That doesn't mean we should ignore our responsibilities. Instead, it's about finding that Harmony—recognizing when to serve and when to take time for stillness in our lives. Imagine carving out moments of quiet reflection each day, allowing yourself to be filled with His presence and wisdom. I don't endorse balance, because balance insinuates that all things on your plate are of the same importance, and this simply isn't true.
Consider these questions: What might it look like to devote time every day to sit at Jesus' feet, through prayer, and reading the Word, these moments can reshape our hearts and minds. This is where our lives are transformed to look more like Jesus!
Actionable Steps to Hit Pause
Set Boundaries: Reflect on areas in your life where boundaries could help. Perhaps saying no to specific commitments or delegating tasks among family members could ease your load. Maybe asking for help (something I have a hard time doing). Setting aside a specific time for certain tasks or things you would like to accomplish in a day can add structure.
Create a Routine: Incorporate a daily routine that allows for connection to God, and space to know Jesus more. This could be early in the morning with a cup of coffee or winding down before your head rests on the pillow. I prefer the early morning however know what works best for you and make the commitment to spend time with the LORD- daily.
Limit Distractions: In an age overflowing with distractions, set aside your phone or turn off notifications during your quiet time. Give Christ your FULL attention.
Engage with Community: Surround yourself with individuals who encourage you to deepen your relationship with God. Finding a small group or mentor can provide essential support. Are you plugged into a local church? It is critical that you are immersed in community where you can be known and know others.
Practice Christ-centered Mindfulness: Introduce mindfulness practices. Pick a verse or passage of Scripture and commit it to memory, hide it in your heart and think on/meditate on it throughout your day. Even taking a few deep breaths, being thankful for the life you have, reflecting on what God has done, is doing and will do in your life- can be a powerful reminder of our Father's loving care. Enjoying a walk outdoors can help you stay present and centered. Nature has a way of calling our hearts back to true worship of our Lord and King.
Embracing a Harmonized Life
As we consider the story of Martha and Mary, let’s not forget the importance of pausing amid our busy lives. Jesus encourages us to CHOOSE the good portion, to prioritize our relationship with Him, and to seek harmony in our commitments.
In a world brimming with distractions, let us learn to sit at Jesus' feet, gripped by His teachings and walking in light of His instructions so as to fill our hearts with a deep joy. We can aim to resemble Mary, opting for what is essential and receiving the peace that flows from being in the presence of Christ.
Next time you feel overwhelmed with tasks, take a moment to reflect. Ask yourself: What truly matters right now? By doing so, you might discover joy and fulfillment in prioritizing what truly counts. It is not always the doing that needs to be done, sometimes the stillness is what is necessary and the good choice! And don't worry, you will have plenty of time to take cues from Martha and check those boxes off your to-do list.
